To celebrate the start of the fall season we decided to go fruit picking in Potsdam! It was really meant to be a pumpkin picking trip, but it turned out that they didn’t have a pumpkin patch. Oh well, it was still a great little family getaway before the weather turned dreary. The you-pick-it farm we went to was called “Hofladen” and it was super fun!
Hofladen is an adorable family farm on the outskirts of Potsdam. It was about 45 minutes by car to get there from our home in Berlin and would be about an hour and a half by public transit. The great thing is there’s a bus station that drops off right at the farm!
The farm consists of a farm store with a simple café on the right and the orchards and fields on the left. The farm store was actually a great stop as they had fresh meats, cheeses, yogurt and freshly-picked fruits and vegetables. They even had hand-pressed cider, a product I have found difficult to find here.
To get started with picking you simply check in and receive a bucket at the cashier. You can also pay a small amount for a berry picking basket. I suggest that you bring your own sturdy bag for fruits and vegetables and a container for berries. The paper bag that was sold to us for our fruit ended up breaking under the weight of it all. Also, be sure to check out their handy calendar too see when their fruits and vegetables are in season and ready to pick!
We set out on our fruit picking journey on Sunday afternoon. As it has been quite a long time since my last you-pick-em adventure, I didn’t realize that we should have made this trip on Saturday morning. The fruit had been pretty well picked over. It was there but it was very hard to find. We couldn’t find any apples that were ready to be picked so we skipped over those. We were able to find some pears that we could reach and were ready to be picked. We actually had to do some off-roading to get a hold of those, tramping through weeds and bushes.
We made our way to the raspberries which seemed to be the last berries available to pick for the season. We intentionally skipped the easy first parts of the lane as we knew that’s where people would have already picked through. But we ended up finding a lot as we went further down the lanes. Our pile ended up being a good two cups full. I love the flavor of a raspberry but not the seeds so I had plans to make a delicious end-of-summer raspberry lemonade! You can find the recipe for the lemonade here. Be aware, it makes A LOT!
We didn’t make it to the vegetables on this trip as we were in a bit of a time crunch but we will hopefully go back to explore more. On our way out of the farm we snapped a quick fall family photo (note the reluctancy of Goldilocks)! I was actually starting to get a little bump at that time!
Have you been to a you-pick-em farm before? Do you have any tips for me and others? I’m still a newbie!
